Powerful medicine foods (Garlic)
As we continue to look at the benefits of garlic, I would like to ask you a
question. Did you know that garlic is helpful in combating colds, flu’s, and
viruses? It possesses the ability to destroy bacteria that cause infection, and
promote sweating. Garlic has anti-inflammatory properties which will decrease
symptoms related to asthma and arthritis. It will also reduce the risk of
atherosclerosis and heart attacks by relaxing the wall of the blood vessels.
Garlic is said to decrease the risk of cancers such as skin, prostate, ovarian,
and colon, as it fights free radicals that poison our cells. Eating any food
from the alliums family will reduce the risk of cancer if eaten at least twice a
week, and up to 80%, if eaten frequently.
Garlic must be eaten raw or lightly sautéed for the best health benefits. If
you chop or crush garlic the enzymes are activated and the phytonutrients are
converted into sulfuric compounds, which are very potent. Do not cook garlic at
high temperatures as this will destroy the phytonutrients enzymes. It can be
sautéed at low heat for just a few minutes, very little damage will occur. When
buying garlic, we suggest organic or locally grown. Make sure the bulbs are
plump, firm, and free of mold. You want to buy regular garlic, not elephant

olive oil and warm for five to ten minutes over low heat. Cool, strain and its

full of antioxidants and phytonutrients. What are antioxidants? Antioxidants
are substances or nutrients in our foods which can protect our cells against the
effects of free radicals. Free radicals are molecules produced when our body
breaks down food, or by environmental exposures like tobacco smoke and
radiation. Free radical’s damage cells and is believed, to play a role in heart
disease, cancer and other diseases.
Leek, garlic, and onions are curative foods; full of manganese, vitamin C, B6,
and vitamin P, which is bioflavonoid. These foods clean the arteries, retard
